Founded in 2008, it's the first national nonprofit built specifically around this problem — feeding and providing emergency veterinary care for the pets of people experiencing homelessness. Since founding, they've distributed more than 2.7 million pounds of pet food and paid out over $7 million in veterinary care for more than 30,000 animals, through a network of donation sites, food banks, and partner veterinary hospitals spanning the country, with a handful of partners in Canada too.
The Pets for Life program does the harder, less visible work — direct, door-to-door outreach to homeless individuals and encampments, meeting people where they are instead of waiting for them to find a resource center.
They also stepped in during recent SNAP benefit disruptions with emergency funding, recognizing that when a household's own food budget collapses, the pet's bowl is usually the first thing to go empty.
