TURN THE LOUD PERSON IN THE LIBRARY INTO A PLEASANT MURMUR.

A Soft Murmur is a free ambient sound mixer: rain, thunder, waves, wind, a crackling fire, a coffee shop, a singing bowl. Blend them together, set a timer, and let the world's annoying noise disappear into the background.

A Soft Murmur
The quietest thing on the internet, and the one that works

Silence isn't always the answer to noise. Sometimes the answer is *better* noise.

That's the whole idea behind A Soft Murmur, and it's built on a simple observation the site makes right on its homepage: some background sound distracts you, and some calms you. The steady whirr of a fan, rain against a window, a distant rumble of thunder when you're safe indoors. Same volume, completely different effect.

Here's how it works. The site gives you ten ambient sounds: white noise, rain, thunder, waves, wind, fire, birds, crickets, a coffee shop, and a singing bowl. Each one has its own volume slider. Turn up the rain, add a little thunder, bring in a fire underneath, and you've built your own storm. There's a timer so it can fade out as you fall asleep or switch off after your work session, and you can save your mixes and share them. A setting called Meander drifts the volumes up and down on their own, so the mix feels organic instead of looped.

The best part is the advice the site gives for noise you can't escape, and it's oddly specific:

- Someone won't stop talking while you study? The Coffee Shop sound turns one distracting voice into part of a pleasant murmur. - Music coming through the wall? Mix a singing bowl with waves or wind. - High-pitched noise bothering you? Birds and crickets help cover it. - Low rumbling? Use thunder.

It's the work of one independent developer, Gabriel, whose contact address is right on the site, and it's been around since at least 2016. The browser version is free. There are also phone apps, with a few free sounds and extras available as in-app purchases, plus a paid tier on the web with more sounds, according to one review.

No ads in your face, no account to start, nothing to learn. Open it, drag a few sliders, and see how fast the room goes quiet.
