Every song you've ever loved — someone on the internet has a theory about what it really means.
SongMeanings has been collecting those theories since 2001. It's a community site where anyone can submit an interpretation of any song lyric, and anyone else can agree, disagree, or write a thousand-word rebuttal explaining exactly why they're wrong.
Some of it is genuinely illuminating. People who speak the artist's native language. People who grew up in the same city. People who were going through the same thing the songwriter was going through and heard something in the words that wasn't obvious from the outside.
Some of it is completely unhinged in the most entertaining way possible.
The format is simple: lyrics on one side, interpretations on the other. You can search any song, any artist, any lyric fragment. You can submit your own reading. You can rate other people's interpretations. You can follow rabbit holes from one song to another for longer than you planned.
It's what the comment section was supposed to be before the comment section became what it became. People who care about music, arguing passionately about art in complete sentences.
Go look up a song you think you understand. Read what other people heard in it.
You might not hear it the same way again.
